​​Why Do Chevrolet ZR2 Pickup Trucks Make Great Recovery Vehicles at Motorsports Events?​

It is all fun and games when you’re out there doing some form of motorsports. It is one of the best ways to thoroughly enjoy the challenge of taking you and your vehicle to the limit. Recently, a fleet of Chevrolet pickup trucks from GM’s Off-Road Driving Team – namely, the Colorado ZR2 Bison, Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison, and Silverado HD ZR2 Bison – attended a Sno*Drift event in Northern Michigan to serve as recovery vehicles for participants.  

What is Sno*Drift? This form of trail-based motorsports combines winter rallying with drifting. Specifying the ZR2 Bison trim on each of Chevrolet’s pickup trucks worked perfectly to handle the deep snow conditions the rally participants will encounter.  

When rally cars find their way off course, they wind up in precarious situations. The snowbanks can be deep, preventing cars from getting out on their own. The job of these Chevrolet pickup trucks is to get them out of the snowbank and back into the rally.  

Each pickup truck had a specific task. The Colorado ZR2 Bison drives the course as a “safety sweep” truck. With a medically trained passenger on board, the Colorado can get to tighter areas of the course to locate any stuck vehicles that may need help. Behind the Colorado, a Silverado 1500 ZR2 Bison played a mixed role of sweeping and recovery. However, the real recovery work is done with the Silverado 2500HD ZR2. It uses its massive torque to get vehicles out of trouble and back into the rally.  

A good number of motorsports venues and events in and beyond the Ohio Valley use Chevrolet pickup trucks for recovery and support vehicles. Even though the conditions are different, their tasks remain basically the same. They often assist with medical and marshal support, hazard clearance, and race vehicle recovery.
