​​Which Driveline Would You Pick for Your Next Pickup Truck: Rear- or Four-Wheel Drive?​ 

All of our Chevrolet pickup trucks give you plenty of choices. Not just in trim, options, engines, and towing packages. You also get the choice between two- and four-wheel drive.  

Each driveline has its own benefits. For example, two-wheel drive pickup trucks offer more payload and towing capacity. This is due to a lower curb weight, yet they have the same Gross Vehicle Weight Rating as their four-wheel drive counterparts. That latter rating takes into consideration the higher towing capacity and payload. Two-wheel drive models will return better fuel economy overall. With only one axle as its final drive and less rolling resistance overall, this means less stress on the rest of the drivetrain, resulting in less fuel consumption. There is also the cost of maintenance. With fewer driveline and electronic components to work on, your service bills on a two-wheel drive pickup truck will be lower overall. 

When it comes to four-wheel drive models, the primary advantage comes down to traction. In any condition, shifting into 4WD can get you going with all four wheels working together. Four-wheel drive is not just for off-roading. It also helps when it snows or when the road is wet. Putting the system into high range maximizes traction, even at highway speeds. When there’s a hill to climb, a four-wheel drive pickup truck can do so. In either high or low range, you can get up that hill with the torque band spread across both axles to gain momentum.  

If the choice comes down to which final drive system you want in your next pickup truck, you need to find the one that works best for your needs. For businesses and fleet managers, that comes down to how you use your pickup truck. Whether it is for the farm or providing a home service, the final drive system can be chosen based on what work it will be used for on a regular basis. You will also need to consider what other uses you may have for your pickup truck. Recreation is a common reason to pick either driveline, based on whether you are trailering or just commuting back and forth to work. It also comes down to where you live and the climate.
