​​When Is It Time to Get New Tires for Your Chevrolet?​

How are your tires holding up? That question is usually asked when someone notices that your tires are not looking their best. They may have noticed that the tread is worn down and there is some wear on the sidewalls.  

Also, you may have noticed that you were losing traction and grip whenever you got behind the wheel. When our roads in Southern Ohio become icy and covered with snow, traction becomes critical. Your tires need to have enough tread to get you through.  

When do you know it’s time for new tires? The first thing you want to do is check for tread depth. If you happen to have a penny, insert it into the tread upside down. If you see President Lincoln’s head, your tread is down to 2/32. That is a dangerous tread depth, and your tires must be replaced.  

Another way to see if you need new tires is by checking the wear bars. If the tread is flush with the wear bars, it is time to replace the tires. Consider that a depth of 4/32 is the lowest you can go in wet conditions. It’s probably best to replace it at 4/32 rather than letting it go to 2/32.  

Tires do get old. You can tell by the condition of the rubber. The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration recommends that you change tires every 6-10 years, regardless of tread depth.  

Damage can also be a factor in the decision to replace your tires. Sometimes, tires receive their share of abuse, not just from brushing up against curbs, but also from various road conditions. If your tires have any bulges, cracks, sidewall punctures, uneven wear, or knots, they must be replaced. The same should be said when you experience frequent slipping of grip from your tires, as well as bad vibration and rumbling.
