The Future of Corvette Design With Gran Turismo 7

Since 1953, the Chevrolet Corvette has been an American icon on the same level as the White House, the Saturn V rocket, and even Mount Rushmore. Its status in history is one of success and winning, as Chevy has taken the Corvette around the world and used it to beat the best from Italy, England, Japan, and Germany in every country with a racetrack.  

The Future of Corvette 

It is only fitting, then, that the iconic Chevy receives a fresh face for its digital future with Gran Turismo 7, the video game that helped create a generation of kids who became obsessed with racing cars on the Sony PlayStation. The two new concept cars, dubbed the Corvette CX and CX.R VGT, will have a significant influence on the future of the car’s design beyond the current C8.

It is aspirational, it is cultural, it is the reason people want to come and work at Chevrolet,” said Phil Zak, Executive Design Director for Chevrolet. “The CX and CX.R Vision Gran Turismo demonstrate our design teams stepping away from the constraints of production vehicles and unleashing their creativity. Through this exercise, we’ve added to Corvette and defined the design direction for Corvette moving forward.” 

The Corvette CX 

Chevrolet says the CX concept features all-wheel drive, is fully electric, and produces over 2,000 horsepower from its four motors, one in each wheel. A 90-kWh battery is installed in the chassis to help maintain the center of gravity.  

How It Was Designed 

The Corvette was designed in collaboration with the GM Motorsports Aero Group, an in-house engineering firm specializing in aerodynamics for General Motors’ race cars, including the upcoming Cadillac Formula 1 team. The collaboration saw very unique design elements added, such as the jet-like canopy that opens to reveal the fighter jet interior. The car is only 41 inches tall.  

A Unique System to Increase Aerodynamics and Downforce 

Thanks to a Vacuum Fan System, the Corvette CX pulls air into the bodywork to control its path and to increase downforce. Both the rear wing and front diffuser are active, meaning they will automatically adjust themselves to help the car have the best aerodynamic performance.  

The Corvette CX.R VGT 

The CX.R VGT racer is rear-wheel drive and features a 2.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine with three electric motors: one for the front wheels and one integrated into the 9-speed dual-clutch gearbox, for racing purposes. It revs to 15,000 rpm. The engine utilizes a revolutionary new e-fuel, which enables it to produce a combined 2,000 horsepower, comprising 900 horsepower from the engine and 1,100 horsepower from the electric motors.
