​How GM Technicians Are Trained​

That is thanks to people like David Piper, one of the creators and teachers who work on the manuals and educational training programs that technicians learn from.

As a former dealer mechanic and later a graduate of the Automotive Service Education Program (ASEP) for General Motors, Piper has the experience to help lead the next generation of qualified technicians to wrench on your new Chevy better than anyone else.

“Part of the reason I took the position I have now is because I know where they’ve been,” Piper says. “Understanding that helps me guide the training content to where it needs to be.” 

A Program That Trains Technicians to Be the Best 

The ASEP teaches students over a two-year period, leading to an associate’s degree, through both classroom instruction and hands-on shop experience, with paid internships at 53 GM dealers across the country. GM says there are 1,500 students in each program at any time, learning all there is to know about GM vehicles and general automotive knowledge.  

An Added Bonus Program 

Alongside the Automotive Service Education Program, students can enroll in the Technicians Excellence Program, which teaches other skills beyond mechanical work and earns them points they can use to purchase tools and other rewards. To date, more than 20,000 technicians have entered the program.

When it comes to vehicle servicing, owners deserve someone who understands how to properly diagnose various issues and doesn’t leave them without their main mode of transportation for too long.  

The ASEP Is About More Than Just Vehicles 

The ASEP teaches things that don’t just apply to being a mechanic, though. “You’re learning thermodynamics, you’re learning heating and air conditioning, you’re learning plumbing, you’re learning fuel systems, you’re learning so much,” Piper says. “There are skills you learn as a technician that you can apply to just about anything.” 

What Makes Piper Qualified 

Upon completing the Automotive Service Education Program, David Piper was a dealer technician before becoming a field-service engineer for General Motors, during which he traveled to dealerships across a region to help diagnose and fix highly specific issues. During this time, he earned his bachelor’s degree and later began working for General Motors in his current role, helping ensure the success of the next generation of GM technicians.
