Five Reasons to Choose the TurboMax Engine

Chevy offers a range of powertrains in the new Silverado, including a potent four-cylinder engine. The turbocharged mill provides surprising torque and efficiency, keeping up with some of the best six- and eight-cylinder options in other trucks. MotorTrend recently outlined the top five reasons to choose the engine in your next Silverado, so let’s take a deep dive into their reasons and why the four-cylinder is an excellent choice.
Plenty of Power and Torque
The turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder, known as the TurboMax, produces a whopping 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. That’s more torque than the Ford F-150’s twin-turbo V6 and Ram’s 3.6-liter V6, giving the Silverado impressive capability. Towing reaches 9,500 pounds when the truck is equipped with rear-wheel drive, and the payload tops out at 2,260 pounds. The smooth-shifting eight-speed automatic works well to keep the engine pushing hard in most situations.

Unique Turbo Design
MotorTrend notes Chevrolet’s Dual Volute turbo design, which helps generate more low-end torque and reduce turbo lag. It also assists with increasing fuel efficiency of 18/22/20 mpg city/highway/combined with 2WD and up to 18/21/19 mpg with 4WD.
Upgraded Engine Design for Less Noise and Better Durability
The TurboMax has a revised, stiffer crankshaft and a fully forged steel bottom end. Paired with the eight-speed automatic, which helps keep noise levels low, the engine feels more refined and less intrusive than the V8 options, especially on the highway.
Better Fuel Economy
Remember those MPG numbers? They’re far better than the V8 options, especially the 6.2-liter unit, which returns just 14/17/15 mpg. That said, some of the four-cylinder configurations dip lower into the fuel efficiency range as they’re paired with mud-terrain tires in the beefier off-road configurations.
No Extra Costs
The TurboMax is the default engine for the Silverado, so it comes standard and does not require added-cost options or upgrades. It’s standard for most trims, including WT, Custom, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, and the LT Trail Boss trims. Stepping up to a V8 engine or the available diesel can add to your expense, so the TurboMax is a considerable value in the Silverado catalog.
