Comparing the Suburban with the Cadillac Escalade

When it comes to vehicles the size of the Suburban, there aren’t many competitors, and the few that exist mostly come from inside the GM brand. That means they will have the same platform, essentially the same engine choices, and generally the same engineering. If you are looking at a high-spec Suburban, a question may cross your mind. “For this kind of money, can I get a Cadillac Escalade?” Barry’s Chevrolet explores the answer to that question.

To start, it is important to realize that for size equivalency, you wouldn’t compare against an Escalade but the Escalade ESV. The Escalade is the same size as the Tahoe. They have the same 121.0-inch wheelbase, the same 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 3rd row, and so on. The Escalade ESV shares the Suburban’s 134-inch wheelbase and has the same 41.5 cubic feet of space behind the third seat. 

The top-ranging Suburban model is the High Country 4WD, with the optional 6.2-liter V8, with a starting MSRP of $84,895. This engine produces 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. The standard 3.0-liter Duramax turbodiesel is a little less at $83,395. You haven’t quite reached price overlap with the Escalade ESV model line yet, as the least expensive model is the 2WD Luxury model. Equipped with the same 6.2-liter V8 gas engine with the same power specs or the 3.0 Duramax Turbo diesel, its MSRP comes to $86,990. But assuming you want 4WD for a reason and not just to jack the price up on the Suburban, the 4WD Escalade ESV will come to $89,890. 

So now you have about $5,000 between the top-ranging Suburban and base Escalade. If you plan on towing, you can opt for the $465 Max Trailering Package and the $750 Enhanced Trailer View Package on the Suburban.  The combination enhances your trailering with:

• Integrated Trailer Brake Controller
• Hitch View
• Smart Trailer Integration indicator
• Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert
• Trailer Assist Guidelines – A remote camera allows you to view behind the trailer from your center screen.

On top of that, you can add the $2,700 Advanced Technology Package, which gets you: 

• Super Cruise
• Enhanced Automatic Parking Assist
• Reverse Automatic Braking
• Rear Seat Media System

Now you are up to $87,155 for the Suburban, and none of these items are on the Escalade Luxury model, nor are they available.  So, you will have to step up to the Premium Luxury Escalade with an MSRP of $101,190. Super Cruise is standard on this model, though the trailer features are still an option. Getting those brings the price up to $104,490.

Of course, there are other paths to take. You can opt for the $4,210 High Country Deluxe package for the Suburban, which includes all the trailering features mentioned above, plus:

• Adaptive Air Ride Suspension
• Panoramic Power Sunroof
• Power Retractable Assist Steps

Add that along with the package with Super Cruise, and you still pay around $3,000 more than the base Escalade, which can’t have all the trailing enhancements.

There are many ways to play this game, but you get the idea. There is a very big difference between the pricing of the Suburban and the Escalade, and there will continue to be a difference as you try to match features. It’s true that even the highest-spec Suburban will never look as exclusive as the Escalade, and its dash will never match that of the Cadillac. But opting for the Escalade will either mean spending considerably more money, losing out on some valuable features, or both. 

We will admit that the Suburban has nothing to match the Escalade-V with its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that produces 682 horsepower and 653 lb-ft of torque. But it is worth asking yourself if you would enjoy that kind of power in a 3-row SUV or a world-class mid-engine sports car instead. For the price of an Escalade-V, you could purchase a 2024 Suburban High Country 4WD and a 2024 Corvette StingRay. We’re just saying…

So, come to Barry’s Chevrolet and test drive a Suburban and even a Corvette if you are so inclined. If you drive off with a well-equipped Suburban, we doubt you will ever wish you bought anything else.
