Car and Driver Loves The Colorado ZR2

The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 has been engineered to punch well above its weight in things that even bigger and more expensive trucks are unable to accomplish. It features better shocks, bigger tires, more underbody protection, and even great comfort, something you wouldn’t expect from a dedicated off-road-able pickup. But the ZR2 aims to make life better and more fun for everyone, not just off-road adventurers.

Car and Driver Testing
In a December test of the all-new ZR2 by Car and Driver, they celebrated how the extra three inches of suspension lift aids in the off-road “prowess.” With the Mutlimatic DSSV spool-valve dampers, the ZR2 means business when taken off the beaten path. They also remarked on how the 33-inch tires and 17-inch wheels help to settle the ZR2, make it ride very well, and have great road manners.
Towing Ability
Chevrolet didn’t just make the off-road capabilities of the ZR2 better through tweaks and improvements with the new off-roader. No, the ZR2 can also tow up to 6,000 lbs when properly equipped, which is 1,000 more than the previous generation ZR2.

Baja Drive Mode
All Colorado trucks feature different drive modes, and depending on the model, your truck will have Normal, Tow/Haul, Off-Road, and Terrain. One thing that sets the Colorado ZR2 apart from the other trim levels is the inclusion of the Baja drive mode, which allows the driver to better control the truck in more wild conditions and even allows for some good old drifting and sliding action when driven on dirt and mud.
What C&D Had To Say
Car and Driver gave some historical information about how the Colorado ZR2 could have shaped history had it been developed 122 years earlier: “In 1902, a miner named William “Burro” Schmidt began digging a tunnel through a mountain in California’s Mojave Desert. He continued, by hand, for three decades, despite that a road was built during that time, and his tunnel came out on a ledge above the valley. You can visit Schmidt’s work down a silty dirt road. It’s a slidey, sandy journey, but it’s so easy in the Chevy Colorado ZR2 that if Schmidt had had one, he wouldn’t have bothered trying to make a shortcut.”

Excellent Safety
Like all Chevrolet cars, trucks, and SUVs, all Colorado models feature some of the best safety. With standard Chevy Safety Assist, you get Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Following Distance Indicator, and IntelliBeam automatic high-beam assist. Optional safety features include Blind Zone Steering Assist, Rear Cross Traffic Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, HD Surround Vision, as well as Rear Pedestrian Alert.

A Colorado Or Something Bigger?
Deciding on a truck can be challenging with so many choices. Do you get a larger Silverado or save some money and get a Colorado? You start to think about your future needs. But maybe Car and Driver can help with what they said in the conclusion of their review: “For most loads and trails, though, the Colorado ZR2 is all the truck you need.” That’s about as glowing as you can get.
